In July 2008, LEGO arrived at San Diego Comic-Con with something it had never brought to a comic convention before: an exclusive Star Wars set. The Clone Wars animated series was weeks away from its theatrical premiere. Captain Rex hadn’t been in anyone’s hands yet. And the LEGO booth at Hall H was selling a box that nobody outside the convention could get.
This is COMCON001-1 — the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con Clone Wars Pack. The first entry in a catalog code that would run for years. 1,200 produced. $75.99. Available only between July 24 and 27, 2008. This collection holds two sealed examples.
The Context
San Diego Comic-Con 2008 ran July 24–27 at the San Diego Convention Center, drawing over 125,000 attendees — its first complete sellout. It was the year of The Dark Knight, Watchmen previews, and the first widespread awareness that Hollywood had fully arrived at SDCC.
For Star Wars, 2008 was the year of The Clone Wars. The animated series premiered theatrically on August 15, 2008 — three weeks after Comic-Con — before moving to Cartoon Network. Clone Wars merchandise was rolling out. Captain Rex, the blue-marked 501st Legion commander who would become one of the most popular characters in the entire animated canon, was being introduced to the public for the first time.
LEGO timed the COMCON001 pack directly to this moment. It was not a commemorative item or a collector’s curiosity. It was a promotional launch vehicle for the Clone Wars line, sold at the event where the show’s audience was concentrated, featuring the characters they were about to meet on screen.
The Outer Box
COMCON001 is not a sealed box in the conventional sense. The outer packaging is a large open-top box — a tray format with a hinged flap on the top that opens upward to reveal the contents inside.
The front carries a battle scene of clones and droids in combat. In the lower portion: Comic·Con 2008 — with an interpunct (a centered dot) rather than the standard hyphen used in the official Comic-Con name. In the lower right corner: the SDCC International seal. The LEGO and Star Wars logos appear at the top.
The top flap, when opened, reveals a different scene — clones fighting droids — across its inner face, along with images of the two retail sets contained inside and the five additional minifigures with their accessories laid out and identified.
The back carries a desert-toned droid army scene along with a list and images of the 2008 Clone Wars retail sets: 7673, 7674, 7675, and 7676 — functioning as a preview catalog of the full line launching alongside the show.
The Contents
The box contains:
Set 7654 — Droids Battle Pack (2007) — 4 Battle Droids and 3 Super Battle Droids with a droid transport carrier and a STAP (Single Trooper Aerial Platform). 102 pieces. Originally retailing at $9.99.
Set 7670 — Hailfire Droid & Spider Droid (2008) — Hailfire Droid with 8 flick-fire missiles, Dwarf Spider Droid, Battle Droid Commander, Super Battle Droid, and 2 Battle Droids. 249 pieces. Released in January 2008 under Expanded Universe packaging. The copy inside COMCON001 is the original 7670-1 release — not the Clone Wars rebrand that followed later in 2008.

Captain Rex (sw0194) — Clone Trooper Captain Rex, 501st Legion, Phase 1. Dark bluish gray visor, pauldron, and kama. Large eyes. This was Rex’s first physical LEGO appearance — and one of only two sets he ever appeared in, the other being the retail 7675 AT-TE Walker released the same year. He carries two blasters.
4× Clone Trooper (sw0201) — Phase 1 Clone Trooper with large eyes, standard white armor. Each carries a blaster.

The Poster
The poster is a two-sided full-color document included with every box. Both sides are documented here from firsthand examination.
Side One: 2008 Mini Figure Gallery
The front of the poster is a portrait-format minifigure reference sheet titled Clone Wars / 2008 Mini Figure Gallery in vertical text running down the left spine.
The poster is divided into two panels. The left panel has a black background and shows the villains and droids of the Clone Wars line: Asajj Ventress, Super Battle Droid, Battle Droid on STAP, MagnaGuard, and Rotta the Huttlet. The right panel has a white background and shows the heroes and Republic forces: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Clone Pilot, Clone Trooper, Commander Fox, and R2-D2.
Each figure is photographed against its panel background with its character name printed below — functioning as a complete visual catalog of the 2008 Clone Wars minifigure lineup. The SDCC International seal appears in the lower left corner.
This poster is a significant piece of documentation in its own right. Many of the figures shown — Ahsoka, Commander Fox, Plo Koon — were making their first LEGO appearance in 2008, and the poster provides a clean official reference for all of them simultaneously. Rotta the Huttlet, Jabba’s infant son from the Clone Wars film, appears here as a small green creature — an unusual LEGO subject that reflects how broadly the 2008 line reached into the new animation.
Side Two: The Comic Strip
The reverse side is a full-length LEGO Star Wars comic strip titled Clone Wars in large orange vertical text down the left edge. The strip uses photographs of actual LEGO figures and builds — the same technique used in LEGO Club Magazine comics of the era — set against desert planet backdrops. The SDCC 2008 seal appears in the lower left with “San Diego / Comic·Con / International / 20 08.”
The story follows Captain Rex and a small squad of Clone Troopers on a mission to eliminate every Separatist droid on an Outer Rim desert planet. The full strip:

THE END!
The comic functions as a showcase for the two retail sets inside the box. The Hailfire Droid from 7670 appears prominently in the missile barrage sequence. The droids from both 7654 and 7670 form the enemy force throughout. It is LEGO’s equivalent of a commercial built into the collectible — product demonstration disguised as storytelling.
Captain Rex — The First Appearance
The COMCON001 pack is, among other things, the first time Captain Rex existed as a physical LEGO object.
Rex (CT-7567) became one of the defining characters of the entire Clone Wars era — commander of the 501st Legion, second-in-command to Anakin Skywalker, one of the few clones to survive into the Rebellion era. His LEGO debut is sw0194: Phase 1 armor in white and blue, dark bluish gray visor, pauldron, and kama, large eyes. He carries two blasters. The figure appeared in exactly two sets in this form: COMCON001 and the retail 7675 AT-TE Walker. Neither is easy to find.
The Comic-Con pack made him available three weeks before the show that introduced him to the world. For the 1,200 people who bought COMCON001 at SDCC 2008, Rex arrived before the premiere.
The Sets Inside
A note worth making: COMCON001 is a bundle of existing retail sets combined with additional figures. Neither 7654 nor 7670 is exclusive to this pack. Both were available in stores. What the pack offered was the combination — clone army vs. droid army in a single purchase — plus Rex and four 501st troopers at a price point ($75.99) below what the retail sets plus loose minifigures would cost separately.
7654 had been on shelves since 2007. 7670 launched in January 2008 under Expanded Universe packaging — the copy inside COMCON001 is that original 7670-1 release, predating the Clone Wars rebrand that came later in the summer. The copies inside COMCON001 are standard retail sealed sets — they are not modified or repackaged versions. A complete COMCON001 contains two intact retail boxes inside the outer SDCC packaging.
Current Value
Brick Ranker records a shelf life of three days — July 24–27, 2008 — and a value growth of approximately 9,100% from the original $75.99 retail price. Current value is approximately $7,000 for a complete sealed example based on average sale price over the last six months. Only 6 confirmed sales have been recorded since August 2022, reflecting how rarely this item comes to market.
The minifigure values are a footnote to the set value. Captain Rex (sw0194) is currently worth approximately $113 loose. The Clone Troopers (sw0201) are approximately $25 each. The 5 minifigures combined represent roughly 2% of the set’s total market value — the other 98% is the sealed SDCC packaging itself.

This collection holds two examples. The physical details documented above — the interpunct in Comic·Con 2008, the top flap format, the poster contents — are drawn from firsthand examination of these examples.
What We Don’t Know
- The distribution method — were all 1,200 units available across all four days, or was distribution managed differently? Were there limits per person? No firsthand account of the purchasing experience at the LEGO booth in 2008 has been documented publicly.
- The booth setup — what did the LEGO presence at SDCC 2008 look like? Was there a dedicated Star Wars section? Were the Clone Wars sets displayed alongside the COMCON001 pack? No photographs of the LEGO booth from SDCC 2008 appear to exist in public archives.
- The Comic·Con interpunct — the outer box uses a centered dot rather than a hyphen in Comic·Con. This may be a period-accurate variant of the official name, a localized typographic choice, or simply a production quirk. It has not been noted in any existing documentation of this set.
