The 2009 Toy Fair Chrome Black Darth Vader: Ten Years of Ruling the Galaxy
100 made. Given to VIP attendees at the 2009 New York Toy Fair Collectors Party. A chrome black Darth Vader in a display case wrapped in his own quotes. And a VIP badge produced in four color variants — 25 of each.
In January 1999, LEGO Star Wars launched. In February 2009, LEGO hosted the New York Toy Fair Collectors Party — the annual press event that had by then become one of the most anticipated nights in the LEGO Star Wars collector calendar. The gift that year was a chrome black Darth Vader in a specially designed display case, with a word cloud of Vader’s most iconic quotes wrapping the back, and the text “Celebrating 10 years of ruling the toy galaxy together” wrapping three faces of the cube. 100 were made. Each VIP attendee received one alongside a numbered badge produced in four color variants.
This is PROMOSW006-1 — the 2009 Toy Fair Chrome Black Darth Vader. It is one of the most visually striking items in the entire PROMOSW series and a fitting capstone to the first decade of LEGO Star Wars.
A note on naming: BrickLink catalogs this item as “Toy Fair Invitation, 2009, Star Wars Promotional, Darth Vader Chrome Black” — applying the same “Invitation” label used for PROMOSW002 and PROMOSW003, which were literally physical invitations mailed before the 2005 Toy Fair. PROMOSW006 was not an invitation. It was given to attendees at the door of the Collectors Party on the night itself, consistent with contemporaneous coverage from Jedi Temple Archives. The BrickLink naming convention is inaccurate for this item.
The Context
2009 marked the 10th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars — a decade since the first sets arrived in stores in early 1999. LEGO marked the occasion with a year-long campaign centered on a chrome black Darth Vader minifigure. The same figure in polybag format (4547551) was randomly inserted into 10,000 LEGO Star Wars sets sold in the US and Europe — a direct parallel to the 2007 Gold Chrome C-3PO promotion for the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. LEGO expanded the 2009 promotion to include battle packs in the eligible sets, unlike the C-3PO promotion which excluded them.
The 4547551 polybag random insert and the PROMOSW006 Toy Fair display case both use the same chrome black Darth Vader minifigure body, but they are distinct items with distinct packaging and completely different collector significance. The polybag is the widely distributed version. The Toy Fair display case is the ultra-limited press exclusive.
The Display Case
The display case is a rectangular plastic cube approximately 2″ × 2″ × 4″ — taller than wide, designed to show the standing Darth Vader figure to maximum effect. The lid opens at the top. Inside, a small plastic stand of the same material as the cube elevates a 6×6 trans-clear plate, on which the chrome black Darth Vader stands with his cape and lightsaber.
The exterior of the case carries several distinct graphic elements. On the front, above black text, is the 10 Year LEGO Star Wars Anniversary seal — Darth Vader’s helmet in the center with the words “LEGO STAR WARS 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY 1999–2009” wrapping around it. Below the seal, in black text, begins a sentence that wraps around three faces of the cube:
Celebrating [side] / 10 years of ruling the toy [front] / galaxy together [side]
“Celebrating” appears on one side face of the cube. “10 years of ruling the toy” continues across the front. “galaxy together” completes on the opposite side — a single sentence that requires turning the cube to read in full.
The large numeral “99” — a reference to 1999, the launch year of LEGO Star Wars — is printed in large white letters beginning on one side and wrapping onto the front, approximately two-thirds of the first 9 on the side and the remainder on the front. This appears on all known examples.
The back of the case features a word cloud of Darth Vader quotes rendered as the backdrop for the figure — the minifigure stands against a typographic collage of his own lines from the films. It is a subtle and effective design choice that transforms the back of the display into something worth examining rather than ignoring.
The Minifigure
The chrome black Darth Vader in PROMOSW006 is sw0200. The figure stands on a 6×6 trans-clear plate on the plastic display stand inside the case, with cape and lightsaber included.
The VIP Badge
Each of the 100 VIP attendees who received a display case also received an individually numbered VIP badge. The badge was produced in four color variants — 25 of each — making the badge itself a collectible within the collectible. Each badge carries the 2009 Collectors Event branding, the LEGO and Star Wars logos, and an image of Darth Vader rendered in the color scheme of that variant. The individual number appears on the badge rather than on the display case — the case itself is not individually numbered.
Three of the four badge variants have been documented:
- Orange/yellow/teal — Darth Vader rendered in warm orange and yellow tones against a teal background. A sample version of this variant exists with “Sample” printed where the edition number would normally appear — indicating at least one pre-production approval badge was produced for this color variant.
- Black/white/gray — Darth Vader in monochrome. Known example: #51 of 100.
- Orange/blue — documented in the Heritage Auctions September 2025 sale of example #53, described as the orange and blue variant.
- Fourth variant — not yet publicly documented. If you have a badge in a color combination other than the three above, please get in touch.
A magnet was also produced using the same design as the production badge but without any text — no number, no event branding. Whether the magnet was distributed to all 100 VIP attendees or only to a subset is not confirmed.
Current Value
Example #53 was auctioned by Heritage Auctions in September 2025 with the original display case and orange/blue VIP badge. The realized price is not publicly available without a Heritage account. No other confirmed recent sale prices have been documented publicly. Given the 100-unit production run, the individual badge numbering, and the 10th anniversary historical significance, this is one of the most valuable items in the PROMOSW series — but the thin secondary market makes precise valuation difficult.
In This Collection
This collection holds the display case along with three associated items: a sample badge in the orange/yellow/teal color variant (with “Sample” where the edition number would appear), production badge #51 in the black/white/gray variant, and the magnet. The sample badge confirms that pre-production approval copies of the badge were produced — at least for the orange/yellow/teal variant. Having both a sample badge and a numbered production badge from a different variant, alongside the magnet, represents the most complete documented assemblage of PROMOSW006 materials known to exist.
