Released at Star Wars Celebration Orlando to mark the 40th anniversary of A New Hope, CELEB2017 recreates Detention Block AA-23 from the original 1977 film — the moment Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, disguised as Stormtroopers, arrive to rescue Princess Leia. The set contains no exclusive elements; everything in it can be sourced elsewhere. What you’re paying for is the packaging and the provenance.
Star Wars Celebration Orlando ran April 13–16, 2017 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida — the same venue as Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012. The event marked the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope. LEGO brought one exclusive set: CELEB2017, Detention Block Rescue. Available only to raffle winners, with a small number of additional sets given away via LEGO’s Twitter page to randomly selected people who retweeted the announcement. The production quantity is listed by some sellers as under 2,500; no official figure has been published.

The 40th Anniversary Context
Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 was framed throughout as an anniversary event. The 40th anniversary of the original 1977 film was the dominant theme of the convention. CELEB2017 was designed specifically for this context: Detention Block AA-23 is one of the most iconic locations from that film, and the scene depicted — Luke and Han in Stormtrooper disguise, just arrived to rescue Leia — captures the moment immediately before the rescue begins.
The Packaging
CELEB2017 uses the same premium two-piece format as 41498 from the same year — a rigid outer slipcase over a plain black inner box. The outer slipcase is black with a high-gloss finish and carries all artwork and product information. The inner box is plain black. A dark red seal sticker with a bordered rectangular frame design wraps from the front around to the bottom and to the back of the slipcase.
The front face carries the primary product information and the main vignette illustration — both Luke and Han minifigures in Stormtrooper disguise inside the detention block, helmets removed, with the cell door and Death Star interior behind them:

The Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 badge appears in the upper right corner. The Disney logo appears at the lower right. The unit number — #0016 — appears on the red sticker seal in the lower right corner of the front and back faces.
The left side face shows Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise against the Death Star corridor lighting — three vertical light panels against black, creating the distinctive striped light effect of the detention block. The Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017 badge appears at the top. The right side face shows Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper disguise in the same corridor setting with the Celebration badge at top.

The reference to Cell Block 1138 is itself a hidden joke — a nod to George Lucas’s 1971 debut film THX 1138, one of several references to that film embedded in A New Hope. Whether LEGO included it as a deliberate Easter egg for film historians or simply as a recognzable line from the scene has not been commented on.

The Build
The set contains 220 pieces to build a vignette of Detention Block AA-23 from the Death Star. The build includes a section of corridor wall with the characteristic cell door — white vertical bars on grey — flanked by grey brick walls and ceiling elements with light stud detailing. A console with printed red and green elements sits in the foreground. The floor is a black plate base.
Two minifigures are included: Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, both in Stormtrooper disguise — white armour with their own hair pieces included separately so they can be displayed either helmeted or unhelmeted. Two additional Stormtrooper helmets are included loose on the build base, representing the guards they have presumably dealt with.
The set contains no exclusive elements — all parts are available from other sets. This was a deliberate LEGO strategy documented at the time: by using no exclusive pieces, the packaging and provenance carry the entire collector value, reducing the incentive for scalpers to break open sets for parts. The same approach was used for the Escape the Space Slug in 2016 and the 2015 mini-builds.
Current Value
Brickset lists the current value at approximately $500 sealed. BrickEconomy lists approximately $487. The no-exclusive-elements strategy has kept the value lower than sets with unique printed parts — collectors can replicate the build for approximately $40 in parts — meaning the sealed premium is attributable entirely to the packaging and the event provenance.

What We Don’t Know
- The production quantity — the total run has not been officially documented. Secondary market listings describe it as under 2,500. The lowest known number in this collection is #0016, suggesting distribution began from #0001. Whether numbers were assigned sequentially by day or randomly is not known.
- The Twitter giveaway examples — a small number of sets were given to randomly selected people who retweeted LEGO’s announcement. Whether these are numbered or unnumbered, and whether they draw from the main production run, has not been documented.
