The 2014 The Ghost Starship with Chopper

San Diego Comic-Con 2014 ran July 24–27. LEGO brought one Star Wars exclusive: COMCON039, The Ghost Starship featuring the Chopper minifigure. 1,000 were produced and individually numbered. The set was a deliberate reveal for the Star Wars Rebels animated series, which had not yet aired — Chopper had not previously appeared in any LEGO set. The back panel states this explicitly.

This collection holds one sealed example: #0101 of 1000.

The 2014 Two-Event Strategy

2014 marked the first time LEGO released what was effectively the same exclusive set at two different events with different minifigures. COMCON039 at SDCC featured Chopper; FANEXPO001 at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto featured Kanan Jarrus. The Ghost Starship model is the same build in both sets — the minifigure is the only meaningful difference. Both were timed to the Rebels premiere and both used the rectangular box format established in 2013, with event-specific branding and colour schemes distinguishing them externally.

Collectors who wanted both character reveals needed to attend conventions in two different countries in the same summer.

The Box

The box uses the same rectangular rigid format as COMCON032 from 2013 but with a completely different colour scheme — warm orange replacing the cold blue-grey of the JEK-14 box. The orange carries through as a border element and accent colour across all faces, consistent with the Star Wars Rebels visual identity.

The front face carries the primary product information and main illustration — the Ghost Starship model with Chopper perched on top, firing a blaster cannon, set against a deep space background with a battle-scarred Stormtrooper helmet visible in the upper right:

The San Diego Comic-Con International 2014 Exclusive badge appears in the upper left corner of the front face. The Star Wars Rebels logo and Disney logo appear in the lower right.

The left and right side faces carry the Rebels phoenix emblem — the angular, flame-like bird symbol of the Rebel cell from the series — rendered in orange against the grey concrete texture that runs across both side faces. The LEGO Star Wars logo appears at the top of each side.

The top face carries the orange Star Wars Rebels-themed artwork — printed box art, not a sticker.

The bottom face is sealed with a long yellow sticker strip that wraps from the bottom up onto the back of the box. The unit number is printed on both ends of this sticker, making it visible on both the front and back of the box. A circular sticker seal is also present on the right side of the bottom face.

The back face carries the congratulations text on an orange panel alongside an illustration of the Chopper minifigure:

Below the orange panel: manufacturing locations, distribution text in English, French, and Spanish, Comic-Con trademark notice, LEGO trademark notice, copyright lines, the Star Wars Rebels and Disney logos, and the end of the yellow seal sticker showing the unit number. The manufacturing text includes Canadian distribution — reflecting the cross-border release strategy of the 2014 Ghost sets.

The Star Wars Rebels Context

Star Wars Rebels was an animated series set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, following a small crew of rebels aboard the Ghost — a modified VCX-100 light freighter. The series premiered on Disney Channel on October 3, 2014, with a preview special airing on Disney XD on October 26, 2013. At the time of SDCC 2014, the show was in production and had not yet aired its first full season.

COMCON039 was the first physical LEGO appearance of both the Ghost and Chopper. The back panel’s language — “from the upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV series” — confirms the set was explicitly positioned as a preview release, not a tie-in to an existing product.

The Minifigure

C1-10P, known as Chopper, is the astromech droid of the Ghost crew. His LEGO minifigure uses a modified astromech droid body in brown and orange — distinct from R2-D2’s blue and white — with a unique dome printed with his characteristic asymmetrical sensor eye. The figure is exclusive to COMCON039 at the time of release, though the character later appeared in retail Rebels sets.

The Build

The set contains 132 pieces to build a mini Ghost Starship. The Ghost is a VCX-100 light freighter — wider and bulkier than most Star Wars vessels, with a distinctive flat top, forward-mounted cockpit bubble, and rear dorsal gun turret. The mini build captures the vessel’s silhouette accurately in light grey and dark grey with yellow and dark red accent elements. The cockpit is a transparent brown dome. The dorsal turret and forward cannons are represented. The model sits flat for display without any base issues — unlike the Sith Infiltrator from 2012.

Current Value

BrickEconomy lists the current value at approximately $399 sealed. The FANEXPO001 variant with Kanan Jarrus commands a significantly higher price — reflecting the relative scarcity of Fan Expo Canada exclusives compared to SDCC releases of the same run size.

In This Collection

This collection holds one sealed example: #0101 of 1000. The box details documented here are from firsthand examination of this example.

What We Don’t Know

  • The piece count discrepancy between COMCON039 and FANEXPO001 — COMCON039 is listed as 132 pieces; FANEXPO001 is listed as 134 pieces. If the Ghost model is the same build in both sets, the two-piece difference should be accounted for by the different minifigures. Whether the Ghost model itself is identical across both sets or has any minor variations has not been confirmed from opened examples in this collection.
  • Distribution mechanics — the ticket or queue system used for COMCON039 has not been fully documented in collector sources. Whether the same daily allocation and per-transaction limit used for COMCON032 applied in 2014 is not confirmed.
  • The seal format change — COMCON039 uses a long yellow sticker strip wrapping from the bottom onto the back (carrying the unit number on both visible ends) plus one circular sticker seal, different from the two circular seals on COMCON032. Whether this format was consistent across all 2014 event exclusives or specific to COMCON039 has not been confirmed from other examples in this collection.
