The 2005 Toy Fair VIP Gala Set
55 Made. Or 75. Nobody Knows.
A standard retail set in a custom slipcase. Given to press guests at a VIP Gala on February 19, 2005. The slipcase has never been described in detail anywhere. Until now.
On the evening of February 19, 2005, LEGO hosted a VIP Gala at their showroom during the New York International Toy Fair. The guests — journalists, collector site representatives, and press contacts personally invited by LEGO — previewed the upcoming Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith product line, got an early look at the LEGO Star Wars video game by Eidos, and heard a LEGOLAND Star Wars Weekend announcement. As they left, each guest received a small cardboard slipcase. Inside was a standard retail LEGO set — set 7251, Darth Vader Transformation, not due in stores until April 2. The slipcase is what makes it a different item entirely.
The Context
TF05-1 is the third of three distinct LEGO Star Wars promotional pieces produced for the 2005 New York International Toy Fair. The first two — the Anakin Skywalker and Luminara Unduli invitation figures (PROMOSW002 and PROMOSW003) — were mailed in January 2005 as physical invitations to the Gala. TF05-1 was the gift given at the door on the night itself — a reward for attending rather than an invitation to come.
The Gala was timed to celebrate two milestones simultaneously: the upcoming Revenge of the Sith release and LEGO’s 50th anniversary of the LEGO System of Play. The choice of the Darth Vader Transformation set as the gift content was deliberate — it was the most dramatic Episode III set in the upcoming line, and giving press guests an advance copy before the April retail release was a meaningful gesture in 2005.
The Slipcase
The slipcase is the defining feature of TF05-1 — the element that distinguishes it from the retail 7251 set it contains. It is made from thicker-than-standard LEGO box cardboard, constructed as a five-sided tray that slides over the retail box. The retail box inserts from the right side when facing the front of the slipcase, sitting snugly inside. The slipcase has no seal — the tray and contents slide freely in and out.
The front of the slipcase carries the LEGO and Star Wars logos at the top. Below them, in large typography, the text reads:

The front also features a custom-shaped cut-out window — not a simple rectangle, but an irregular shape that works around the printed Darth Vader imagery on the slipcase front and the VIP Gala text positioned in the bottom right. The opening is roughly P-shaped, a large vertical section with a horizontal extension — designed to expose the retail box artwork beneath while preserving the slipcase’s own printed elements. Rather than covering or replacing the retail box’s front art, the slipcase frames and partially reveals it. The cut-out turns the retail packaging into part of the presentation.
The three non-open sides of the slipcase carry the same logos and text as the front — LEGO and Star Wars logos with the VIP Gala branding. The back features an image of the Darth Vader minifigure with the left side of his helmet cut away to reveal the minifigure head underneath showing the burned Anakin Skywalker face printing — the transformation concept visualized on the outside of the box. Standard trademark and copyright information appears at the bottom of the back.
There are no stickers, serial numbers, production numbers, or any other markings on the slipcase. It is not individually numbered. The only way to know which of the 55 or 75 examples a given slipcase is would be through provenance — and since the slipcase has no seal and slides freely, provenance is impossible to verify without direct chain of custody documentation.
The Contents
Inside the slipcase is a standard retail 7251 Darth Vader Transformation box — the same box that appeared in stores from April 2, 2005. The inner box is not modified, relabeled, or distinguished from the retail version in any way. A complete TF05-1 example is therefore: slipcase + sealed standard retail 7251 box.
The retail set contains 53 pieces and three minifigures — Darth Vader (without black cape, one of only two sets at the time to omit it), a burned Anakin Skywalker figure, and an FX-9 Surgical Assistant Droid figure. The build is a transformation scene: Anakin on an operating table with a turntable mechanism that rotates him to become Vader, attended by the surgical droid with five bent Battle Droid arms holding tools. None of the minifigures are exclusive to TF05-1 — all three appeared in the standard retail release.
The Production Quantity Dispute
The most documented open question about TF05-1 is how many were made. Two figures exist in the public record and they do not agree:
- 55 — the figure cited by Brickset, BrickRanker, and TheForce.Net’s photo archive
- 75 — the figure cited in Rebelscum’s contemporaneous 2005 Toy Fair coverage, written by someone who attended the event
The Rebelscum figure has the advantage of being reported in real time by an event attendee. The 55-copy figure has the advantage of appearing in multiple collector databases. Neither has been confirmed by an official LEGO source. The slipcase carries no numbering of any kind, so individual examples cannot be counted or traced. The true production quantity remains unknown and may never be resolved definitively.
Current Value
BrickEconomy estimates approximately $7,520 for a complete example. BrickRanker reports an average sale price of approximately $3,217 over the prior six months. The spread between these figures reflects the small number of sales and the significant variation between examples based on slipcase condition and whether the inner retail box is sealed. At least one AFA-graded example (grade 8.5) has appeared on eBay, confirming that serious collectors have sought third-party authentication for this item.
The absence of individual numbering and the freely sliding slipcase make condition and provenance the primary value drivers. A sealed inner retail box with a clean slipcase is the ideal configuration. The slipcase having no seal means its condition is entirely dependent on how carefully it was stored over the past 20 years.
In This Collection
This collection holds one example with both the slipcase and the sealed inner retail 7251 box intact. The slipcase description documented above is drawn from firsthand examination — the typographic layout of the front, the cut-out window, the sliding tray format, and the back imagery have not been described in detail in any public collector source prior to this article.
What We Don’t Know
- Production quantity — 55 or 75? The discrepancy between Rebelscum’s contemporaneous report and the collector database consensus has never been resolved.
- The 50th anniversary connection — the Gala was explicitly tied to LEGO’s 50th anniversary of the System of Play. Does the slipcase reference this milestone anywhere, or is the branding purely Star Wars and Toy Fair focused?
- Event materials — guests at the Gala also received a product catalog on CD at check-in. Were any other materials — event programs, badges, printed invitations — distributed on the night? Does anyone have a complete set of Gala materials?
- Provenance — with no numbering and a freely sliding slipcase, chain of custody is the only authentication. Do any examples have documented provenance back to a named 2005 Gala attendee?
